Webby – Self-Hosted Lovable Alternative: AI Website Builder SaaS
Think of it as a self-hosted Lovable. Agencies and entrepreneurs who wanted to sell AI website building under their own brand had two choices: pay per seat for a closed platform like Lovable, Wix or Framer, or put together a builder, hosting, billing and AI themselves. Webby is a white-label SaaS they install on their own server. Their customers describe a site in plain language, an AI agent builds it as a real React project, and they can edit it by chatting or visually, then publish it to a subdomain or custom domain. The operator sets up plans, credits, payment gateways, languages and branding from one admin panel, so they're running their own Lovable-style business instead of paying rent on someone else's.
What I learned
The AI was the easy part. The hard part was everything around it: running a separate Go builder so long generations don't block PHP, streaming progress back live, and making updates safe on hundreds of customer servers I don't control. I ended up building a plugin system and a self-updater that fixes permissions before clearing caches.
